Using simulator to test Leginon installation
Added by Anchi Cheng over 9 years ago
message from Shinbo who is having issue with upgrading from a very early version of Leginon (1.6 or 2.2) on a system with FEI F20, Gatan CCD, and DE direct detector.
how to make " a virtual machine with Window XP and tecnai simulator and gatan camera simulator" for testing (mentioned in issue#2920). Usually, we don't have enough time to book space to test so much steps. Or you suggest re-install leginon totally rather than upgrade it ?

Instrument simulators for FEI scopes and Gatan camera are from the manufactures. This is normally a developer's tool. You will have to contact them and make a case that you need them.
If you want to practice installation in term of setting network configuration, you can also do it without these but rely on Leginon simulators default in pyscope/instruments.cfg.
Virtual machine is not a requirement for simulator. You just have to install them on a Windows PC that runs Window XP. I have them on virtual machine just so that I can keep also my database and web server on the same laptop but in unix platform.
Whichever way you install this, you will need to do the part of installation involving microscope/camera computer in Complete Installation titled "You must complete the followings manually even if you have used autoinstaller successfully".
While a real instrument simulator is very useful when I write the code, it does not always reproduce configuration problem that you appear to have on your camera computer, as in the case of issue #2920.
