Hardware requirement for Appion really depends on how you want to use it. That amount of hardware requirement that appion interface and wrapper adds to the system is equivalent of the bare minimum required by Leginon. The rest is for the actual processing softwares that Appion wraps. Just remember that the more particle you process or the more requirement the software you want to use through appion interface, or the more people you want to access your appion server, that bigger requirement you will need. We once made an all inclusive Appion server for one person on an virtual machine with 4 processors and 2 GB RAM. Worked out for about 10000 particles metadata insertion to the database, but almost all actual processing had to be done on a separate computer cluster that is connected to the appion server.

Initially I just want to test the software to see if I can use it for my EM images. I want to upload EM images (as .tiffs) then use particle selection, alignment and classification of 2D particles which can then be measured. I may want to analyse something in the region of 20,000 particles.

Is it best to install all the processing packages or can you just pick the ones you need?

Processing package installation is completely up to you. Autoinstaller will try but most likely fail to install larger packages. Get a decent desktop computer should be o.k. but others with more installation experience may give you better estimate.

Confirming what Anchi wrote. Using autoinstaller to install all on the same machine would work. You might need to adjust web server, scheduler and other software settings depending on your OS. We use CentOS 6.x internally for development, testing and deployment.
