Leginon

Unfortunately, some new problems have cropped up. Recently, a Gatan image filter was installed on our F20 microscope in Leeds. In normal manual usage of the F20, a particular procedure has to be gone through with the software in order to avoid causing difficulties and this may be related to the problems occurring with Leginon. In manual usage, the Tecnai user interface is started first, then some new software - Filter control - and then Digital Micrograph. At the end of a session DM is shut down, then Filter control and then the Tecnai UI. We tried following the same start up sequence, then starting up the Leginon client on the microscope PC and then the main Leginon (on another laptop PC with Linux). At the end of a session, we first shut down the main Leginon, then the Leginon client and then go through the shut down procedure for a manual session. We have also tried to work as before - without the Filter control software. In either case, what happens is that the microscope software can't be started up properly in subsequent sessions. The Tecnai UI starts up fine, but the Filter control fails with an error message "The Gatan instrumentation bin is not turned on or connected properly" and DM can't start up properly either. (In normal manual usage, it is necessary to start up Filter control before DM or low dose mode does not work properly.) In order to get things working normally again so another user can use the F20 subsequent to shutting down from a Leginon run, it is necessary to turn off the microscope PC and the Gatan instrumentation (the bin and the cameras), turn everything on again and then wait a fairly long time for the microscope to come back up,
