Does the microscope PC need access to the linux leginon computer?
Added by Patrick Goetz about 7 years ago
Hi -
This page: http://emg.nysbc.org/projects/leginon/wiki/Windows_Installation_All
seems to indicate that the microscope pc needs to be able to communicate directly with the leginon linux computer. I'm having trouble understanding why this is necessary. Normally we could just set this up regardless, but the Microscope PC IP address is an RFC 1918 address that the manufacturer says can't be changed "without breaking everything" and our campus regrettable using a flat address space (no NAT) which includes all the RFC 1918 addresses, and that particular IP address is already assigned to another machine. We'd have to jump through some hoops to make this work, which is why I'm checking to see if it's necessary.

Network is always the tricky bit. The data transport in Leginon are done with TCP through socket connection, and not in the most fleable way. There are a few configurations that has been used successfully. You can look at them at Network_Configuration
If you have a secure network that you can put all component on there, the network card used to be connected to the support PC can be reconfigured for it. It will not break everything. The service engineer just need to reconfigure their vnc service with the right address. If there is a concern and you must used the support PC to isolate the microscope, you can do port forwarding through that.

Hi -
So I think the answer to my question is yes; the microscope PC needs to communicate with the linux leginon system?

OK, I think I'm good. The last network diagram on the Networking Wiki page is the way to go; and in fact the only way, since the microscope manufacturer in this case direct connects the microscope PC directly the the support PC. I'm a linux guy and wasn't sure Windows 7 could do NAT, but my Windows expert co-worker just showed me that it's actually fairly easy to set up.
Thanks.

Yes, it does. Leginon is meant to control the microscope, so it does need connection.
